What is a TEAM? T=Together, E=Everyone, A= Achieve, M=More. According to the research, Belbin identified that ‘Team’ is a group of people working towards common goals and objectives and sharing responsibility for the outcomes. However, how to build a effective team to achieve a better result of the task is a big challenge for a leader or manager. Tuckman (1965) provide a model to identifies 4 stages of a successful team development and relationships. They are Forming, Storming, Norming and Performing.
The first stage Forming is that many of individuals being putting together into a group. they are identify the common goals of the group. In this stage, individuals within the group are been typified by polite behaviour, such as impersonal, guarded and watchful. As a team leader in this stage should structure the group, allocate the roles and responsibilities of each team members and establish their personal identity within the group.
The second stage is Storming. As team members are better know each other and their tasks. They are more openly points out their ideas and views.So, in this stage, the disagreements may express and challenges been realized within a teamwork. In order to create a successful team, the leader should confronting people and dealing with conflict. This is very important to deciding whether the team success, because everyone in the team need to be respect and tolerance.
The third stage is Norming. With the development of the team, team members will set up their standards and procedures to develop their skills. This stage is important for a effective team to ensure the leader have communicate with each members of the team to control conflict and hostility. It will contribute to tacking challenges and getting feedback.
The fourth stage is Performing. when the team was success in previous stages, the team has already been motivated, organised and closeness of each members. Team is gonna be flexible and the team members are supporting and trusting each other. They share their ideas and tolerance each other at this stage. So, they will be working together to achieve their common goals effectively.
Because of the world changing, the organisations become more and more diverse.Diversity is a big issue for team building, it can include ethnicity, gender, age, social class, experience level and personal type. Diverse team represent people inside the group may come from different culture background with different working behaviors and attitudes. Charles Handy’s Model of Organisational Culture divided organisational culture into 4 types. They are Power Culture, Role Culture, Task Culture, and Person Culture.
Based on Handy’s model, he suggested that organisations should try to match the organisation culture. In order to achieve the common goals of the organisation, managers need to understand different department require different culture within the team. So, as a team manager, he or she need to adapt these culture to better guide the teams members improve their performance to give organisation good results of the tasks.
Management is getting work done through the effects of other people (Mullins, 2010:434). Diversity makes team difficult to manage. There are some challenges that diverse team bring to the organisations. First of all, the team leader needs to lead and motivate a diversified group members, work across to the cultural boundaries and effectively achieve the common goals. Secondly, managers need to meet government requirement and stakeholder expectation, and keep the competition with competitors to face the complex global business environment. Thirdly, the international work environment require managers need to across to the culture difference to get the work completed.
However, there are still some advantages happen in diverse team. First of all, diversity make a team cognitive flexibility. Different academic background team members can broaden team’s ability to tackle obstacles. For example, if a team set up with similar team members, they may come up with only two or three ways to solve a problem. A diverse team may provide more solutions or challenge each other’s views. Secondly, diverse team could separate specific roles within the team based on their different personal strengths. Team members will be motivated to have better performance to meet their individual duty and objective. Thirdly, diverse team have more conflict in problem-solving situations, that effect the team have to collaborate and investigate the issues until reach a consensus. Each of team members will strict critically analyse the process of solutions to challenge others to get the best result. Lastly, diverse team have more creativity and innovation. They resists conformity so they will bring their own idea to solve a problem, increase creativity is good for find out the most benefit way for the team.
